SUBMISSION 2: TUTORIAL SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

HI GUYS,

YOU'LL BE AWARE OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SECOND SUBMISSION FROM THE COURSE OUTLINE:

Submission 2 (20%) in week 9
Design Development
A complete set of drawings and models that are sufficient to articulate the formal configuration in relation to the program and inhabitation, as well as the structural system and construction considerations. Based on the nature of your project, appropriate scales of the drawings and models must have been discussed and agreed upon by your studio master. A draft of your design report is to be hand to your tutor.

AND:

The design report should contain, as a minimum: an introduction to the project, a description of the program and an in-depth analysis of one focus area.  The program itself together with other supporting information, such as reduced design drawings and model images, should appear as appendices. As a guide, approximately 60% of the report should be devoted to the 'Focus Area'.

The report should be approximately 2000-3000 words.  It should be well illustrated with annotated diagram and sketches that tie the stated objectives and design strategies to the final design.
The report should be in a distinct from, yet complementary to your Arch 7201 project proposal. It should contain nothing that is general, unrelated to the specifics of your design resolution, or merely padding (www material, photocopies of technical information, etc.).

TO CLARIFY THESE WITH RESPECT TO THE WORKING METHODS OF OUR TUTORIAL GROUP PLEASE READ THE NOTES BELOW:

There are two broad areas for you to consider; the mechanisms for representing your design and the design report.

The philosophy that I have espoused and encouraged regarding representation is that the forms of representation should be intrinsically linked to the conceptual ideas underpinning each of your projects. As most of you are engaging with ideas that transform over time it is appropriate the the mediums you use to represent your design are time based ... put simply, animation and real-time captures/environments are an alternative to static drawings. Following this, digital models are also encouraged and supported from this point of view ... and might be represented via static images, animations or demonstrated live. I would include a word of caution here regarding presenting live demonstrations ... while they seem like an easy option on the surface (no need to pre prepare stills or animations) they do require absolute mastery of the software and presentation techniques that do not distance you from the presentation/reviewers. Not much is worse than a muddled/malfunctioning live presentation. Static drawings and physical models/prototypes might also be the most appropriate given the conceptual underpinnings of your scheme ... and while I see no need to print hard copies of any material at this stage it would be wise to prepare hi resolution versions of all of your images so that they might be published in the print media at a later stage. The native resolution of the large screens is 1920 x 1080 ... this should be considered a minimum for still images. 720p should be considered a minimum for animations and real time captures.

In terms of structuring your presentations; follow the format of the assessment criteria (ensure that you address each of these)... including spending 60% of your efforts to represent the focus of your project.

You'll have 10 minutes to present verbally, followed by a discussion period. I will be absolutely rigorous regarding timing ... you will be stopped at the 10 minute point. This means you need to plan your presentation carefully and get to the point quickly. This is an outcome centric presentation, we are all familiar with your design processes and background, so focus on the resulting architecture.

Regarding the report, this should be submitted as a pdf. Please adhere to professional levels of language and English grammar ... ask someone else to read your draft before submitting it. I will be especially concerned with the requirement that there is nothing "general, unrelated to the specifics of your design resolution, or merely padding" included in the report. This is an opportunity for you to take ownership of the project.

In terms of structuring your report; once again follow the format of the assessment criteria.

Your work needs to be both distinctive and significant. By being distinctive it shows us that you have made a unique contribution to the field of your enquiry ... by being significant it shows us that your contribution is more than simply different from everybody else's, but that it might change the way other people consider the field and the work produced within it in the future. In other words we are looking for the seeds of leadership.

Finally, ensure that the key innovations/successes/challenges you have developed are clear and celebrated ...

I don't think anything I've noted above would come as a surprise to any of you, but hopefully reinforcing it in this way settles any nerves you may have prior to another important assessment milestone.

FINAL SUBMISSION

HI GUYS,

IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS REGARDING THE OUTPUTS REQUIRED FOR SUBMISSION IN YOUR JOURNALS THIS FRIDAY (10TH OF JUNE) I'V PUT TOGETHER THE FOLLOWING:

1. OUTPUTS REQUIRED:

FINAL RESEARCH MATRIX
4 x 1920x1080px FINAL MARKETING IMAGES
FINAL DOCUMENTATION OF EXPERIMENTS 1, 2 AND 3

THESE OUTPUTS ARE DRAWN DIRECTLY FROM THE COURSE OUTLINE FOR OUR STUDIO GROUP AND ARE AN AMALGAMATION OF WORK EXPECTED AT MILESTONES THROUGHOUT THE PAST 6 WEEKS.

REGARDING THE MARKETING IMAGES:

THESE IMAGES 'MARKET' THE THREE EXPERIMENTS AND THE RESEARCH MATRIX ... IN OTHER WORDS THEY SELL THE IDEAS IN A CAPTIVATING AND SEDUCTIVE MANNER. BUT THEY SHOULD BE MORE THAT THAT ... FROM THE WIKIPEDIA WE SEE A RICHER DEFINITION:

Marketing practice tended to be seen as a creative industry in the past, which included advertising, distribution and selling. However, because the academic study of marketing makes extensive use of social sciences, psychology, sociology, mathematics, economics, anthropology andneuroscience, the profession is now widely recognized as a science, allowing numerous universities to offer Master-of-Science (MSc) programmes. The overall process starts with marketing research and goes through market segmentation, business planning and execution, ending with pre- and post-sales promotional activities. It is also related to many of the creative arts. The marketing literature is also adept at re-inventing itself and its vocabulary according to the times and the culture.

SO THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IMAGES THAT ARTICULATE MORE THAN THE EXPERIMENT ITSELF AND ENGAGE WITH BIGGER ISSUES ... HOW ONE PARTICULAR EXPERIMENT RELATES TO THE OTHERS, HOW IT RELATES TO YOUR WORLD VIEW, HOW IT RELATES TO ARCHITECTURE AND ITS REPRESENTATION.

FINALLY, THEY SHOULD GROW OUT OF THE RESEARCH YOU HAVE DONE ... IN OTHER WORDS, IF TIME IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR IN YOUR RESEARCH THEN THE IMAGES MIGHT TRANSFORM OVER TIME.

2. THE JOURNALS:

THE JOURNALS FOR OUR STUDIO GROUP ARE YOUR BLOGS. YOU SHOULD PROVIDE SOME MECHANISM TO ENABLE A REVIEWER/CRITIC TO UNDERSTAND THE KEY ELEMENTS OF YOUR RESEARCH SO FAR ... SO RATHER THAN A REGULAR DIARY YOU'LL NEED SOMETHING LIKE A TABLE OF CONTENTS TO ORDER AND DIRECT A PARTICULAR ARGUMENT. THIS MIGHT BE A LIST OF LINKS THAT REPRESENT THE WORK IN A PARTICULAR ORDER. YOU MAY NEED TO CREATE NEW POSTS OR EDIT EXISTING POSTS TO FILL IN ANY BLANKS.

YOU SHOULD ENSURE ANY IMAGES ARE ABLE TO BE ENLARGED UPON CLICKING. SEE THIS POST FOR ARCH1101 IF YOU FIND YOUR IMAGES AREN'T ENLARGING AFTER YOU CLICK THEM: http://arch1101-2011.blogspot.com/2011/06/useful-flowgraph-version-20_01.html

3. ARE WE MEETING ON FRIDAY:

NO, AS YOUR SUBMISSIONS ARE DIGITAL YOU CAN SUBMIT ON-LINE.

4. WHAT TIME ON FRIDAY IS THE SUBMISSION:

THE REST OF THE STUDIO MASTERS WILL BE RECEIVING WORK FROM THEIR GROUPS FROM 4-5PM IN THE RED CENTRE. SO YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE YOUR BLOG COMPLETELY IN ORDER BY 5PM.

CHEERS, I HOPE THIS HELPS, LET ME KNOW IF I'VE MISSED ANYTHING.
